Summary for 2301-2305 Eastlake AVE / Parcel ID 2902200990 / Inv # EA004

Historic Name: Hines Public Market Common Name: 14 Carrot Café
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Eastlake
Built By: Year Built: 1924
Commercial vernacular buildings were built along major streetcar routes to provide nearby residents with groceries and other daily needs. Eastlake Avenue was an important streetcar route, connecting downtown to the University District, first over the old Latona Bridge and later over the University Bridge, completed in 1919. This small commercial building has been an Eastlake fixture since 1924. For years it housed a grocery and meat market; Carr's Fine Foods, owned by Arlyn Carr, and a meat market owned by Val Sonntag were here for more than fifteen years from the 1930s until the 1950s. At that time the sing said "Carr's Fine Foods." There has also traditionally been a tavern here, with beer parlor run by Joseph Carroll in 1938. Mack's Tavern in 1952, the It'll Do Tavern in 1966 and now the Eastlake Zoo Tavern as well as the 14 Carrot Café. Although the siding on this budiling has been altered, the changes appear to be reversible.
The most distinguishing feature of this rectangular wood-frame commercial building is the original canopy and sign saying "Hines Public Market." Cladding on the front is brick with wood bulkheads. The transom windows above the canopy remain, although the southern ones are covered with vertical wood siding, as are the display windows on this storefront. The other storefronts are more intact, with wood bulkheads and recessed entries. The south elevation on Lynn Street has asbestos and vertical board siding and another storefront with fairly intact windows and clapboard cladding. The rear (west) elevation is clapboard with pairs of windows with original 9-light sash and other multipaned configurations, as well as a garage door on the alley.
