Summary for 2045 Eastlake AVE / Parcel ID 2902200205 / Inv # EA002

Historic Name: Boston Grocery Common Name: Serafina
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Eastlake
Built By: Year Built: 1925
This is a highly intact example of the commercial vernacular buildings that were built along major streetcar routes, to provide nearby residents with groceries and other daily needs. Eastlake Avenue was an important streetcar route, connecting downtown to the University District, first over the old Latona Bridge and later over the University Bridge, completed in 1919. This building once housed five small stores, but now has a single occupant, a popular restaurant. In 1938 it housed a laundry operated by a Chinese immigrant, Woo Sun Yow. In the 1950s it was the Boston Grocery, along with other businesses such as a meat market, Walker's Gun Shop, an auto parts dealer, a printer and a beauty shop.
This simple vernacular building, clad with red brick, is distinguished by the decoration of angled brickwork and the concrete diamonds and rectangles on each of the two street facades. The storefronts, with wood doors and display windows, is substantially intact.
