Summary for 2940 6TH AVE / Parcel ID 7666203735 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: M J B (coffee?) Common Name: Sherwin-Williams Paints
Style: Modern - International Style Neighborhood: Duwamish
Built By: Year Built: 1954

Although partially obscured by a metal shipping container, the main elevations of this building appear to have changed little. The plan dates back to the original construction of the warehouse building between 1954 and 1955.  Early photographs show what looks like unfinished concrete, rather than the present painted surfaces. At that time, a sign for “M. J. B,” possibly an early and local Seattle coffee company, was attached to the parapets of each of the main elevations. The property was owned by D. S. Tobias in 1943 and by the Hainsworth Construction Company at the time of construction . Sherwin-Williams, the paint company, now occupies the building.

Note: Historical photo dates from 1955, (courtesy of Washington State Archives, Puget Sound Regional Branch).

This one story building has an unusual floor plan, essentially formed by two interlocking rectangular shapes. Along 6th Avenue, this manifests itself as a low box-like form with a flat roof and overhanging eave, followed by an elevation set at about a 45 degree angle. The 6th Avenue elevation, which faces west, includes five punched window openings. Each window includes three pairs of glass panes, separated by relatively thin muntins. To the south of this, there is an original storefront divided into square sections by deep mullions. The shorter south elevation of the box-like form has one longer window opening, with several windows similar to that found on the 6th Ave South elevation.

The angled elevation consists of three loading docks with large service openings topped by overhang. The overhang is a continuation of the overhang on the box-like form. Set back from each of the elevations, there is a continuous parapet. In general, the original structure included tilt-up concrete walls, as well as concrete walls with pilasters and a roof of wood frame construction.
