Summary for 2951 1ST AVE / Parcel ID 7666207410 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: C. J. Young Iron Works Common Name: Growing Green Interiors (bldg 1 from 1910s)
Style: Other - Industrial, Vernacular Neighborhood: Duwamish
Built By: Year Built: 1912

This shed was originally built around 1912, but has been altered many times. A photo from the 1930s suggests that the façade was originally more rectilinear with a central raised portion, as well as multi-pane windows to each side of a central service entrance. The 1942 photo shows that at that time, the façade still had a few more ground floor openings than today, although it already had its distinctive curved shape. It was also clad in “corrugated iron,” according to the King County Tax Assessor’s record card. By the 1930s, the shed housed the C. J. Young Iron Works. The adjoining building to the south was completed by 1942, also for the same owner.

This is the northern building of two buildings, which are located on the same parcel. It is distinguished by its curved false front, which is topped by a raised rectangular shape. Its façade has one service entrance, followed by a  more regular sized doorway. Presently the whole façade is clad in sheets of corrugated metal, which are probably attached to the original timber façade. Behind the façade, the structure is a heavy timber one, with monitor roof, supported on trusses, as well as additional dormers, at least on the north side. Although the main façade and the north elevation have been reclad, have no windows and have clearly been altered, the building has a presence along First Avenue South.
