Summary for 500 BROADWAY / Parcel ID 219810-0005 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: unknown Common Name: Imperial Grocery
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: First Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1922

This early twentieth-century commercial district between First Hill and Squire Park developed at a key location near the James Street car barn, surrounded by street car lines, residential areas and early institutions.  The institutions have grown significantly, with Seattle University to the east and hospitals  and medical buildings to the west.  The original small homes have been replaced by newer apartment buildings.   This small mixed-use building, built in 1922, has been altered as the neighborhood around it has changed, but it still contains a small grocery, which was probably a major feature of the original block.

This small grocery sits at the northeast corner of Broadway and E. Jefferson Street in a block of similar buildings.  It is rectangular in plan, clad with clapboard.  The south storefront has been partially covered with plywood and is covered with a security grill.  The other storefront has a large newer window.  Second-story windows have newer aluminum sash.
