Summary for 1424 20TH AVE / Parcel ID 7228501770 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Free Classic, Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1904
This is a an example of transitional architecture combining elements of Queen Anne -- Free Classic design with a bungalow scheme that borrows from the pyramidal family of vernacular architecture popular throughout the nation in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The structure’s integrity has been compromised by the replacement or alteration of several windows and modifications to the entry porch.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

King County GIS Center Property Report (; accessed August 19, 2008)

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

This house was built in 1904 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report. According to the King County Property Record Card, the house was remodeled in 1920; however, the extent of the work undertaken at that time is not indicated.

There is an early shed roofed addition at the rear of the structure.
The Tuscan column that originally supported the outside corner of the inset entry porch, and the associated porch railing, have been removed, and a wall with a small opening has been installed at the north elevation to partially enclose the porch. Several of the original windows have been altered or replaced. The new windows in the front-facing window bay significantly alter the character of the house. The cladding appears to have been patched where some of the window openings have been altered.  A fabric awning has been added over the entry.
