Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Shingle Neighborhood: Central Area

This is an example of the Shingle style applied to the national folk house typology popular in the last half of the nineteenth century. The structure exhibits good design integrity despite some remodeling and the replacement of several windows.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

King County GIS Center Property Report (; accessed August 18, 2008)

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

This is a two-and-a-half story, shingle, drop siding and vertical board siding clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a full basement. The rectangular gambrel roof with minimal overhangs and enclosed soffits.

The large gambrel style gables, extensive use of shingles, and the curved wall recess provided for the front gable windows, are all typical features of the Shingle style. The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with any of several turn-of-the-century housing styles (the Queen Anne style windows that characterized the structure in 1937 have since been replaced with plainer vinyl units).

This house was built in 1895 according to the King County Property Record Card (the King County GIS Center Property Report indicates that the structure was built in 1900; however, the database from which this information is drawn cannot record a construction date earlier than 1900).

There is a very early addition at the rear. The upper floor may have been remodeled. Most of the windows have been replaced with vinyl units. A screen door has been added at the entry.
