Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: American Foursquare, American Foursquare - Craftsman, Queen Anne Neighborhood: First Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1904
This is a fairly typical example of American Foursquare architecture utilizing elements of early craftsman and late Queen Anne design. The structure exhibits a high degree of integrity, although parts of some of the windows may have been replaced or rebuilt.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattleā€™s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, John Micheli appears to have owned the structure from about 1932 until 1937. Ayako Matsumoto apparently acquired the property in 1949.

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

This is a two story, clapboard, shingle and drop siding clad, wood frame duplex concrete; concrete foundation, over a full basement. The porch appears to be built on a post and beam foundation.

The rectangular plan is capped by a hip roof with moderate overhangs and open soffits with exposed rafters.

The doors and the windows, particularly the large, cottage style, double-hung units featuring triangular and diamond-shaped panes in their upper sashes, suggest Queen Anne sensibilities; the roof slope and detailing look forward to the emerging Craftsman style.

This structure was built in 1904. Although the building appears to be a single family residence, the King County Property Record Card suggests that it has functioned as a duplex since its initial construction. The upper sashes of some of the large, cottage style, double-hung windows may have been replaced or rebuilt.
