Summary for 2114 E Crescent DR E / Parcel ID 359200673 / Inv #

Historic Name: Kleinberg, Hortense, House Common Name:
Style: Tudor - Cottage Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1925

Significance
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local).
This is one of the first of a number of houses built on E. Crescent Drive by Charles Arensberg, presumably on speculation. No architect is indicated on the permit (#249415). This one was built in1925; the first identified owner, other than the builder was Hortense Kleinberg, who purchased it in 1934. However, it probably had a previous owner, as the housing market was strong during the late 1920s. Crescent Drive is a steep street on the northeast part of Capitol Hill, above Montlake; it was most likely slow to develop because of its steep grades and relative lack of streetcar access. However, the hill afforded good views to the east and north, and large middle-class homes were built during the 1920s.

Appearance
This house sits above the street with a garage at the basement level. It is a variation of the Tudor style (English Cottage), with a steep cross-gabled roof with clipped gable ends. The stucco cladding is typical of this style. The most notable feature is the prominent rounded hipped-roof bay above the entry, surrounded with diamond-paned leaded glass casement window. The entry itself is sheltered by a simple gabled roof. A stucco-clad chimney rises along the gabled end to the west of the entry, flanked by leaded glass windows on each story. The side elevations have similar windows. The east end has two diamond-paned windows, probably indicating a staircase.
