Summary for 2933 2nd AVE / Parcel ID 0695000285 / Inv #

Historic Name: Windermere Apartments Common Name: Windermere Apartments
Style: Gothic - Collegiate Gothic Neighborhood: Belltown
Built By: Year Built: 1924
This building, dating from 1925, is typical of the numerous apartment buildings that were constructed between the two world wars. In only twenty years, Seattleā€™s population had exploded from 80,671 (1900) to 315,312 (1920). After the regrading of Denny Hill between 1898 and 1911 opened this area up for development, developers soon constructed apartment buildings to meet the acute housing need. These buildings provided modest but comfortable accommodations that were affordable for the sales clerks, clerical staff and other workers in downtown businesses. The Windermere has unusually ornate terra cotta ornamentation, with a Gothic motif around the entry and on the parapet. However, the original wood-frame divided light double-hung windows have been replaced by aluminum frame windows in a very different configuration.
The three-story solid brick Windermere is clad with buff brick on the front and north elevation, but re-clad with stucco on the south elevation. The center entry has a two-story terra cotta surround with Gothic motifs. Other terra cotta includes three large Gothic inspired panels in the center section of the parapet and smaller panels at the corners. A terra cotta cornice runs above the third story windows. Windows are newer metal sash in a modern configuration.
