This house dates from 1890 and was remodeled in 1910. This is a house which dates from the early settlement of Cascade and the Lake Union area and appears to be the oldest in Cascade itself. Its exterior appearance seems unchanged, except for minor and temporary changes to the porch railing, at least since 1958. The low shed roofed addition to the back of the house, which juts out slightly on the east side, appears to have been made in 1946. The building also forms part of a virtually uninterrupted row of remaining single family houses -- although many are from a slightly later period-- that runs from this house and 1210 Republican Street next door (to the east), along Republican St west, past Fairview Avenue into the “Westlake area.” This row of early single family houses, mostly outside Cascade, is remarkable within the context of the South Lake Union area, where most single family houses have been demolished.
This simple house, originally built in 1890, has a first story and attic level. Its front elevation is clad in cedar shakes. There is a porch with shed roof, supported by thin wood posts. The west and most of the north elevation are clad in flush wood siding, which probably dates from the original construction. The main plan is rectangular, with an almost square addition to the back, not seen from the street, as well as a low shed roof addition to the east.
