This modest house is an intact example of a vernacular cottage of the early 20th century, and a typical house of a working man and his family. It is one of the most intact remaining structures of the small community of Ross that flourished here early in the century. It is unusual for such a modest house to retain this degree of integrity, especially on a busy street surrounded by commercial uses. It is probably a pattern book design, as this type of cottage was commonly seen in such books. The first owner, in 1905, is not known. In 1919 it was owned by a laborer, Robert J. Bell and his wife Elizabeth, who added a basement to the house. Later owners and tenants included an elevator operator and a machinist. Since the 1970s it has been occupied by students and is now owned by the adjacent Seattle Pacific University.
This typical vernacular cottage has a hipped roof with extended rafter tails and hipped dormers on the front and east elevations. The main (south) façade has a recessed porch on the west half, with two square paneled columns with scroll brackets. The windows on the porch and the front façade have lozenge-patterned upper sections. Other windows are one-over-one sash in pairs, with casements in the dormers. The east elevation has a three-sided bay with one-over-one windows. Cladding is clapboard with vertical boards below the water table and shingles on the dormers. The rear elevation has a recessed porch at the northeast corner, with two windows and a bracketed column similar to that on the front.
