This is an excellent intact example of a typical 1920s bungalow, unusual in that it is made of brick rather than wood. It is particularly unusual in that, according to the Tax Assessor records, it is of solid brick construction rather than the more common brick veneer. The design combines the several stylistic influences. It has a gabled roof and recessed porch seen in Craftsman bungalows, round columns and fan-lighted windows seen in Colonial Revival buildings and clipped gables typically found in the English Cottage style. It is one of the relatively few intact single family homes remaining on California Avenue, the arterial spine of West Seattle. It has been converted to commercial use (an insurance office), as was typical throughout the city as traffic increased along major streets and streetcar lines.
This red brick bungalow has a side gable roof with clipped gables and a full-width recessed porch. The porch roof is supported by two pairs of large round columns. The front door has an arched fanlight and sidelights; the major windows on the porch have similar fanlights. Other windows are predominantly 4/1 and 1/1 double-hung wood sash, with terra cotta tile sills. One fixed-pane window on the south elevation maybe a replacement. There is a square bay on the north elevation. The porch balustrade and stairs are brick, with brick belt courses running along the balustrade and above the wide windows. The house sits high above the street, surrounded by small shrubs.
