Historic Name: none Common Name: Assistance League Thrift Shop
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1922
In the opinion of the survey, this property appears to meet the criteria of the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance.
This is an excellent and intact example of a Craftsman bungalow, a style that is emblematic of the Wallingford neighborhood. This is the most intact of several single-family homes that are in commercial use on North 45th Street, the primary commercial street of Wallingford. Its notable features include decorative wood brackets and bargeboards and a pop-out bay. This house remained a home for many decades, but its conversion to commercial use is common on busy arterials. It is currently a thrift shop operated by a non-profit agency.
This bungalow features many Craftsman characteristics. It is s side-gabled structure with a full-width gable across the front (north) elevation, which covers a wide recessed porch. The two porch support columns are battered and clad with clapboard, as is the rest of the building. The top of each column ends in four vertical pieces of wood on which the gable edges rest. The porch and stair balustrades have square wood balusters. The east elevation has a square pop-out bay with a gabled roof. This small gable, as well as the prominent front gable and the side gables all have arrow-shaped bargeboards, pairs of decorative braces, two small windows and decorative wood slats in the gable ends. The bay has three windows, a wide horizontal one at a high level, flanked by narrow 1/1 double-hung windows. Similar windows are on the front elevation. The only noticeable alteration is the addition of a fabirc canopy on the front of the porch.
