Summary for 8410-8414 Greenwood AVE / Parcel ID 6430500364 / Inv # GR010

Historic Name: Becker Building Common Name: Greenwood Antique Mall
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: Greenwood/Phinney
Built By: J. Charles Stanley Year Built: 1927
This one-story building was built one year after the neighboring Greenwood Block, and complements it in style. It is significant both as an intact example of a small neighborhood commercial building and as one of a grouping of buildings at this important intersection. Until the 1950s, the city limits was at 85th Street, and the street car terminus was at 85th and Greenwood, making this one of the most intensively developed commercial intersections in North Seattle. It has a high degree of physical integrity, with reversible changes to one storefront. The building was a grocery store for many years. In 1927, it was built by the Becker brothers, who operated Becker Brothers Market in the 1930s-40s. In the late 1940s the building was occupied by the Central Tavern and two small stores. It again became a market, the Kertis Food Center, in the 1950s. Since the 1960s it has housed a variety of small stores, including a hobby shop, a tavern and, currently, an antique store.
This is a one-story concrete commercial building with cast-stone ornament in an arch motif similar to the adjacent building. A concrete parapet rises above the cornice in the center of the building, with the words "Becker Building." The storefronts retain their original configurations, with recessed wood-and-glass doors, wood-framed display windows with transoms and tile bulkheads. The pilasters end in simple capitols at the level of the transoms. One storefront, a tavern, has been covered in corrugated metal, which appears to be removable.
