Summary for 3318-3320 Beacon AVE / Parcel ID 3650100030 / Inv # BH007

Historic Name: none Common Name: Day Moon Press
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: North Beacon Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1930
This small apartment commercial building is generally intact and relatively ornate for the Beacon Hill area. Ornament is provided by courses of buff brick above the first floor, the second floor windows and along the cornice. Tile on the storefront provides additional ornament. Scattered development began on Beacon Hill in the 1890s, but activity increased after 1898 when the city purchased 235 acres on the hill for a reservoir and cemetery. In 1901 the city chose what is now Beacon Avenue for Pipeline Number One from the Cedar River Watershed. A second parallel pipeline was completed in 1908, along with two reservoirs near Beacon Avenue South and SW Alaska Street. In 1911 the city set aside the rest of the property as a park, opening a golf course in 1915. Significant growth, including extension of the streetcar line, occurred in the 1920s, when these stores were built. The local high school, Cleveland, opened in 1927. It was during this period that this building was constructed, shortly before the growth of the 1920s was halted by the Depression.
This commercial/apartment building is in largely intact condition. Cladding is red brick, with buff brick at the cornice and above and below the windows. The single storefront is largely original, with wood window frames and a black tile with a band of unusual green tile. The bulkhead below the display window is wood. A single apartment entry, with its original wood door, is at the north end of the main elevation. The second floor windows are replacements of the original multipane sash.
