This 3-story brick-clad apartment building was constructed in 1930, according to the 1937 King County Assessor property card, in the Uptown neighborhood. The building is known as The Grex.

Constructed in 1930, this apartment building is located at the northwest corner of First Avenue W and W Republican Street. The 3-story brick-clad building has a rectangular plan and stands on a poured concrete foundation. The building has a flat roof with a parapet; a metal coping has been added to the parapet. The building’s main (west) elevation fronts First Avenue W. The building features blonde-colored brick which is highlighted by cast stone details with Art Deco design motifs. The main elevation is divided into three bays with the center bay projecting one brick length beyond the rest of the elevation. The parapet steps up to highlight the center bay. The center bay contains the centered front entrance which is accented by a cast stone door surround with relief carving.  The front door is wood with leaded glass sidelights and transom. A cast stone beltcourse with relief carving forms the window headers for the third floor windows. The building’s south elevation fronts W Republican Street and has nine bays; the bays on this façade are organized like the main elevation with three trios of three bays each. The center windows of each bay at the third floor also have cast stone headers. Decorative brickwork forms the sill of some of the building’s windows. The building features replacement metal windows but still retains its wood brick moldings, sills, and mullions. Windows are 1:1 sash.

The building retains moderate integrity and is a typical example of an apartment buildings constructed in the 1920s and 1930s.
