Summary for 512 BROADWAY / Parcel ID 2198100015 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: unknown Common Name: Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Center
Style: Commercial Neighborhood: First Hill
Built By: Year Built: 1906
This early twentieth-century commercial district between First Hill and Squire Park developed at a key location near the James Street car barn, surrounded by street car lines, residential areas and early institutions.  The institutions have grown significantly, with Seattle University to the east and hospitals  and medical buildings to the west.  The original small homes have been replaced by newer apartment buildings.   No construction date is given for this building, but it appears to be from the first decade of the century; it has been greatly altered as the neighborhood around it has changed.
This rectangular three-story building sits on a mid-block lot in a block of similar structures.  It is of brick masonry construction; the north side is brick with a lightwell on the second floor, clad with bright corrugated metal.  The second story windows have newer narrow metal sash.  The northern storefront is relatively intact with a recessed entry, large display windows with transoms, white subway tile and ornate pilasters.  The other two storefronts have been altered with covered transoms and newer windows.  The lot on the north side must have been vacant for many years, because there is a ghost sign on the north elevation, an advertisement for Holsum bread.
