Summary for 1413 20TH AVE / Parcel ID 7228502155 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne, Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1903
This is an example of gable-front vernacular or early bungalow design that was originally characterized by Queen Anne detailing but has been "recharacterized" at least twice over the course of its existence by changes to the fenestration. The structure’s design integrity has been compromised by replacement of the windows at the front elevation.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

The original windows and doors were characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne design. The pented gable is also typical of that style. The three-quarter height Tuscan piers (with noticeable entasis) standing atop the solid porch railing would have given the front elevation a slight Free Classic flavor, though the solid railing and inset porch at the front of the apparently simple rectangular structure anticipate features of Craftsman bungalow design.

There appears to be an early extension at the back of the house that gives the structure an L-shaped plan that cannot be discerned from the street. The fenestration was significantly altered by replacement of several of the original windows and the original entry door in the late 1950s (and again more recently) with units of dissimilar style. The cladding appears to have been refurbished.
