Summary for 1643 21ST AVE / Parcel ID 7228501845 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Cottage Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1902
This is a fairly typical example of Queen Anne -- Cottage architecture with some limited spindlework detailing built on what appears to be a bungalow footprint. The structure’s design integrity has been slightly compromised by an early back end addtion and modification of some porch and soffit details.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

King County GIS Center Property Report (; accessed August 19, 2008)

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

The small size of the structure, the irregular floor plan, the door and window configurations, the hipped main roof with intersecting gable, and the spindlework detailing at the porch all are typical of Queen Anne -- Cottage design.

There appears to be an early shed roofed addition at the back of the house. Some windows may have been added near the back of the structure. The soffits at the main roof overhangs appear to have been rebuilt. The original wood steps and associated railing have been removed and replaced with a concrete stairway with a new, lighter railing
