Summary for 921 21ST AVE / Parcel ID 7228501465 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Cottage, Vernacular Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1900
This is an example of small scale Queen Anne design based on vernacular gable front and wing typology. The structure’s integrity has been compromised by changes to the cladding system and alterations to the entry.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne design. The footprint of the house is somewhat irregular but the roof configuration suggests a vernacular gable front and wing scheme. The low slope gable roof and bracketing at the street facing elevation of the entry porch appear to anticipate Craftsman style detailing.

This house was built in 1900 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report.

An extension of the structure at the rear may be an early addition. The entry porch, which was enclosed in 1937, has been opened to the weather by removal of the entry door and the at least two large windows with divided lights. Some of the extant windows appear to have been refurbished or replaced in kind. The cladding was replaced or covered with composition shakes in the 1950s but has since been returned to something approaching its original appearance (though the current stain finish is atypical for a house built at the beginning of the twentieth century). Some of the detailing has been simplified and the decorative woodwork that once adorned the peak of the front facing gable has been lost.
