Summary for 1432 21ST AVE / Parcel ID 7228501050 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1905
This is an example of transitional architecture combining elements of Queen Anne and Shiingle style detailing with a roof atypical for either of those styles on a bungalow footprint. The structure’s design integrity has been slightly compromised by alterations to the entry porch.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods. The structure is located in a portion of the Central Area also known as the East Madison district.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property.

King County GIS Center Property Report (; accessed August 19, 2008)

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard and shingle clad, wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a partial (15%) basement. The rectangular plan is capped by a clipped gable roof with minimal overhangs and enclosed soffits. There are two large shed roof dormers.

The windows and doors are characterized by patterns and details customarily associated with Queen Anne design. The recessed front gable window flanked by curved shingle clad walls is a signature feature of the Shingle style.

This house was built in 1905 according to both the King County Property Record Card and the King County GIS Center Property Report.

The detailing of the dormers suggest that they may be early additions (although they were in place when the house was surveyed by the Assessor in 1937). A few of the side wall windows appear to have been replaced or modified. The front door appears to have been replaced. The post at the corner of the front porch appears to have been altered and a new slender post has been added at the top of the entry stairs. A very simple entry step railing has also been added.
