Summary for 917 N 47TH ST N / Parcel ID 9521101330 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: William & Mary Denner House Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Cottage Neighborhood: Fremont
Built By: Year Built: 1906
This is a distinctive and well-preserved hipped cottage; it is a good example of modest working class house types that were prevalently constructed by building contractors and carpenters during this era. It was constructed ca. 1906 or earlier and is located in the Woodland Addition to Salmon Bay City, which was plated by Robert D. McFadden in February 1887 and was one of the earliest platted and developed residential areas in Fremont. King County tax records indicate that this residence was constructed in 1906; however, it appears to be older and is very similar to a cottage located at 920 N. 35th St. that was built in 1901. The earliest known owner and resident was William Denner, a German immigrant who was a laborer; he lived at this address with his wife Mary and daughter Grace from c.1908 until at least 1914. Grace Denner was a clerk at the Stone-Fisher Co. department store at 2nd Avenue and University Street. By 1920, Mrs. Denner was a widow and appears to have joined Grace who was married and living in Tacoma.
Located mid-block with front elevation oriented to the north. One story, wood-frame, single family residence. Modest late Queen Anne style cottage. Measures approx. 24’ x 49’ w/ concrete foundation and basement level. Bellcast hipped roof cottage with projecting flared front gable at east side of facade. Prominent pedimented front gable and polygonal bay window at east side of façade. Diamond window in gable end. Cutaway entry porch at west side of facade. Original narrow horizontal cedar siding without corner boards appears to remain in place. Original diamond pattern shingle siding at gable end remains in place. Flared barge boards at gable end. Original double-hung wooden windows appear to remain in place with cottage window at the front bay, which included leaded-glass upper sash member. Original wide roof soffit remains in place as does a central narrow brick chimney. Modern aluminum storm windows in place. [Very similar to cottage located at 920 N. 35th St., built in 1901.]
