Summary for 950 N 43RD ST N / Parcel ID 5694501055 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: David N. & Sarah Smith Common Name:
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Fremont
Built By: Year Built: 1895
This is a distinctive but altered example of a traditional front-gable and wing vernacular house type. Efforts to determine the date of original construction have been unsuccessful. King County tax records indicate that it was originally built prior to 1900 and the design of the house (traditional front-gable and wing floor plan and building form) and historic building fabric (tall narrow window type) are indicative of a late-19th C. construction date. From 1900 to 1905 or later the property was owned by David N. Smith, a plaster and brick layer. By 1910 it was owned by Retta White (probably as a property investment/rental property). By 1911, it needed to be re-shingled further indication that it had already been in use for some time. The cottage window may have been added at that time. A garage and chicken house were added to the site in 1919, indicating that it was used for agricultural purposes. This house is worthy of additional research.
Located at the NE corner of the intersection of N. 43rd St and Winslow Pl. N. with the front elevation oriented to the south. Distinctive traditional front-gable and wing vernacular house type. Wood frame structure with concrete foundation and basement level. Front gable (wing) is one and one-half story and measures approx. 14’ x 28’; side- gable wing is one-story and measures approx. 24’ x 20 ft. Side wing is centered on front-gable wing with traditional full width porch along south elevation. Steep roof pitch at main front gable. Very tall narrow window openings at visible west and south elevations. Original tall narrow sash members appear to be in place. Historic variegated siding (6” horizontal fir siding and scalloped & diamond pattern shingles at gable end) has been replaced by machined shakes. Window trim, corner boards and barge boards removed. Original/ historic cottage window with diamond pattern sash no longer in place. Brick chimney remains at center location.
