Summary for 4122 2ND AVE / Parcel ID 1819800210 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Thos. & Amelia S. Elliott House Common Name:
Style: American Foursquare - Craftsman Neighborhood: Fremont
Built By: Year Built: 1906
This house is a distinctive and relatively good example of a popular turn-of–the–century residential design known as the American Four Square house type. It appears to have been constructed according to a planbook source and is similar to popular plans known to have been promoted by local planbook purveyors Fred Fehren and Victor Voorhees during this period; however, the design source has not been identified. This house was constructed in 1906 during an intense period of historic residential development in the district. It is located in the William Crawford Tracts, which was platted by David Eastman of The Eastman Company in April 1905; thus, this house was constructed very shortly after the 9.2 acre plat – the former Crawford homestead - was opened for residential development. This was the last large plat to be recorded in the Fremont area, whereas the great majority of plats were recorded between 1887 and 1890. This house may have been built for Thos. J. and Amelia S. Elliott, who appear to have been the initial owners and residents of the residence (although the address was then known as 4072 2nd Avenue NW). Thos. and Emilia Elliott came to Seattle from South Dakota. He was a lumberman associated with a saw mill (possibly Mullen-Gebharht Co., where he was vive-president & manager in 1907). In 1909, he was affiliated with the Queen Anne Lumber Co. The Elliott family included six children; two of their sons also worked in the lumber business. Architects plan books were typically distributed via lumber yards. By 1921, the property was owned by Andrew Almquist. King County property tax records indicate that the house was remodeled in 1925; the extent of that work (possibly interior) has not been identified.
Located at an uphill mid-block site with the front elevation oriented to the west. Two story, wood-frame, single family residence. Distinctive example of American Four-Square house type. Generally very well-preserved. Measures approx. 29’ x 44’ w/ concrete foundation and full basement level. Prototypical low-pitched hipped roof form with wide overhangs. Projecting hipped roof porch at north side of façade. Hipped dormers with double windows at north, south and west elevations. (possibly east elevation). Clad with narrow horizontal cedar siding original or similar to historic cladding materials. Polygonal bay windows at first floor level of west (front) and south elevations. Polygonal bay windows at second floor level above porch of west elevation (front). Original double-hung wooden windows appear to remain in place. Prominent original exposed roof brackets remain in place. Original ornate leaded glass entry window remains in place. Original glazed entry door may remain in place. Original central brick chimney may remain. Original square porch posts with ornate brackets appear to have been removed and replaced. Roof non-historic composition shingle. The character and condition of the interior is not known.
