Summary for 1407 15TH AVE / Parcel ID 1728800056 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Cottage Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1888
This early, Queen Anne Cottage style house retains its original form and, despite the replacement of several windows, exhibits a high degree of integrity. It may be one of the oldest wood buildings in the City of Seattle.

It is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, J. E. Carton apparently owned the house from about 1931 until at least 1937. It appears the structure was acquired by Joseph Heibly (or Leibly) in 1948. Brie Gyncild has owned the house with various partners since acquiring it from Marley L  and Rose M. Young in 1995.

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

King County GIS Center Property Report (; accessed July 22, 2008)

This house was built in 1888 (King County Property Record Card; the King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 22, 2008, gives the year built as 1900).

The siding and the detailing of the structure have been altered very little since the house was surveyed by the King County Assessor in 1937. However, at most of the window openings, the original 2/2 double hung units have been replaced with double hung windows featuring false divided lights giving them the appearance of 9/9 units. The house is strikingly similar to its neighbor at 1417 15th Avenue, though the latter structure has been the victim of more extensive alterations.
