Summary for 120 24TH AVE / Parcel ID 0007600187 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne - Cottage Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1904
The house is a typical Queen Anne cottage that appears to have retained a fairly high degree of integrity, although the house is difficult to observe from the street and has been altered.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history and record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, F. S. Hargrave owned the property from about 1920 until at least 1937. The current owners acquired the house from Charels L. Short in 1997, who purchased the house from Jean S. Teshima in 1993.

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

King County GIS Center Property Report (; accessed July 29, 2008)

This is a one-and-a-half story, wood frame single-family residence, clad with drop siding, shingles and clapboards, on a concrete foundation over a full basement. The small simple rectangular structure with front facing gable, enclosed soffits and spindle work at the covered porch is characteristic of the folk or cottage variant of late Queen Anne design.

The house was built in 1904 (King County Property Record Card; King County GIS Center Property Report) and remodeled in 1922 (King County Property Record Card). A shed-roofed structure appears to have been added at the south elevation.
