Summary for 948 27TH AVE / Parcel ID 1189001170 / Inv # 0

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Queen Anne Neighborhood: Central Area
Built By: Year Built: 1905

This is a good example of late Queen Anne architecture, although the structure’s design integrity has been compromised by replacement of the original wood sash with aluminum.

This is one of approximately 2,200 houses that are still extant out of more than 5,000 that were built by the end of 1906 in Seattle’s Central Area, Eastlake, First Hill, Leschi, Madison Park, Madrona, and North Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

A complete permit history, and a complete record of ownership and occupation have not yet been prepared for this property; however, Jessie M. Owen apparently owned the house from about 1935 until at least 1937. It has been owned by Burns and Frankie Fisher since 1963.

King County Property Record Card (c. 1938-1972) Washington State Archives

King County GIS Center Property Report (; accessed July 29, 2008)

This is a one-and-a-half story, clapboard and shingle clad wood frame single-family residence on a concrete foundation, over a half basement. The porch appears to be built on a post and beam foundation.

The asymmetrical façade and steeply sloped roof with full width, pent enclosed, front gable and enclosed overhanging eaves, the cross gable roof formed by the north and south side gable dormers, the off-axis entry and recessed porch, the chamfered bays (each with tall 1/1 wood double-hung side windows and a central wood “cottage” windows featuring Queen Anne sash – all now replaced with aluminum sash), the numerous single 1/1 wood double-hung windows with sashes of equal size (also replaced), and the use of shingle siding in the peak of front gable are all characteristic features of the Queen Anne style. The plain entablature at the front porch, and its extension around the house just below the overhanging eaves, are the only “free classic” elements in the design of the structure

The house was built in 1905 (King County Property Record Card; King County GIS Center Property Report, accessed July 29, 2008).
