This house is significant as an excellent example of a patternbook American Foursquare and because of its associations with the pioneer Prentice family and their agricultural activities. John Prentice was a South Park pioneer who farmed on "Valley Road near 11th Avenue South"; a block of land which included the block bounded by 8th and 10th Avenues, Kenyon and the rear property lines on Southern. It was on the southwest corner of this parcel that his son, Robert built this house and garage about 1908 and proceeded to develop Prentice-Watson Florists, a business which spanned the next 50 years. Robert Prentice was a carpenter before pursuing the florist trade. John Campbell bought the house in 1924. (See 839 Kenyon for discussion of florist business).
This is an excellent, intact example of a pattern book American Foursquare with Craftsman detail. It is a two story box with a hipped roof which flares at the eave. Rafter ends are exposed. Thehipped roof dormer follows suit. The second story is wood shingled and the first story is clad in narrow clapboard. The foundation is pattened stone. The windows are one-over-one double hung wooden sash. The upper lights of the windows and the dormer windows aer harlequin pattern leaded glass. The entrance porch is hipped and is supported by square wooden columns that rest on handrails composed of siding to match the house. A small one story hipped roof dependency stands to the south. This house and its setting contribute to the historic streetscape.
