Summary for 6248 Flora AVE / Parcel ID 2734100985 / Inv # GT079

Historic Name: Adolph G. and Elsie Vanhoutte House Common Name:
Style: Vernacular Neighborhood: Georgetown
Built By: Year Built: 1905
This property is associated with the residential and commercial building boom in Georgetown which occurred between 1890 and 1916. Fueled by the construction of the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company’s new brewing facility after the turn of the century and the arrival of foreign immigrants, especially German and Italian, Georgetown came to rely more on its commercial and industrial bases rather than agricultural. With the increase of industry and business, Georgetown had grown in population from 1,913 in 1900 to approximately 7,000 by 1910 as families located themselves near its factories and other places of employment. The original owner/builder of this residence has not been identified. It is known to have been owned by Adolph G. (and Elsie) Vanhoutte by c. 1927 who appears to have owned it into the 1970s. Adolph Vanhoutte is known to have worked as a meatcutter in the 1930s.
A generally intact however altered example of a hipped-roof vernacular house type. This small house type was commonly constructed throughout the American West during the later half of the 19th C and the early decades of the 20th C. This example exhibits distinctive design features and historic building fabric associated with popular architecture design modes during the late 19th C: a distinctive one-story cottage form accentuated by hipped roof with prominent front pedimented gable, a typical cut-away front entry porch and a combination of original tall, narrow and standard double-hung window sash. The house is currently clad with asbestos shake siding laid over the original rustic siding. It includes modest features drawn from the popular late 19th C. Queen Anne design modes: prominent gable and asymmetrical facade. The footprint of the principal portion of the house is 24’ x 43’ with a small one story rear wing and porch. Exterior alterations of note include remodeled entry stairs at the front porch and basement constructed in 1939. A portion of the central brick chimney remains in place
