Mrs. J.E. Smart constructed the Stanford Apartments, originally the Smart Apartments, in 1924. The building originally contained 32 two and three room suites, each containing “in a door” Murphy beds, hardwood floors, and tile bathrooms. The basement was equipped with a hot water heater and an electric laundry with electric dryers. The monthly rates were $47.50 and up. This straightforward brick box apartment building retains much of its integrity and most of its original windows. Architect Earl Roberts designed several apartment buildings in the University District including the Washington Manor, Malloy, Commodore, and Duchess apartments. Roberts designed many apartments and commercial buildings throughout Seattle during the 1920s. His offices were located in the Burke Building in downtown Seattle during the 1920s. Walter & Brady, general contractors, constructed the building. Additional References: "Apartments in U District to Cost $55,00." Daily Journal of Commerce, September 26, 1923.
