Summary for 4532 1st AVE / Parcel ID 8818400070 / Inv #

Historic Name: Common Name:
Style: Arts & Crafts - Craftsman Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1915
This house was erected in 1915 by merchant builder P. E. Wentworth who owned the property at the time according to the building permit (#139993). Abbie Eliz Hemphill had owned the property since December 1934 when the Assessor surveyed the property in 1937. Polk’s Seattle Directory lists Elizabeth S. Hemphill, a teacher at Alexander Hamilton Junior High School, as a resident of the house in 1935. Dorothy L. O’Connor apparently purchased the property in 1946. Charles H. Gould, Jr. appears to have acquired the house in 1971 and upgraded the electrical system with new service and additional circuits the following year. The current owner, Antoinette Wills, has owned the property since at least 1982 and appears to have owned it together with Mike Wills prior to that date.. The house is significant as an intact example of craftsman bungalow architecture completed by an active and prominent local merchant builder near the end of Seattle’s first north end building boom. Nyberg and Steinbrueck identified this building as a structure significant to the Wallingford community.
This is a one-story shingle clad frame residence over a full basement on a poured concrete foundation. The moderately sloped roof, wide barge boards, triangular timber knee braces and bungalow style double hung windows identify this house as an example of the craftsman style. A gabled bay extends from the south elevation. The house features a somewhat unusual cross gable bungalow design with rugged chimney standing at front (west) elevation. Storm windows have been installed at some window openings. No other significant modifications are apparent
