Historic Name: Common Name: Cascade View Apartments
Style: Modern - Wrightian Neighborhood: Wallingford
Built By: Year Built: 1956
This Modern era, Wrightian inspired apartment building was built in 1955-56 by A. Krueger for owner Cyril A. Jones. I t was designed by Ira E. Cummings (718 Olive Way). It may be unique in Wallingford as a structure employing the roman bricfk cladding, flat roof, deep overhangs and play of rectangular volumes inspired by F. L. Wright's mid and late career work.
Two story, six unit , roman brick veneer frame apartment building on a concrete foundation over a full basement that contains several living spaces, utility spaces and a small, two car garage. The plan of the building is basically rectangular but a volume extends to the east at the north end of the structure and a lower volume extends to the west at the south end, giving the footprint a "Z" configuration. The southernmost volume steps down the sloping site and is offset from the main mass of the building by one story. The strong horizontal lines established by the facia of the three separate roofs, the elongated roman bricks, and the balconies and their railings are punctuated by vertical elements such as the wide chimneys at the south and north ends of the main building mass and an extended brick parapet at the east side of the lower, southernmost mass. Rectangular roman brick planters and a series of low retaining walls further break down the basic form of the building by extending the play of volumes into the site and landscaping. The windows and doors are minimally ariculated; the windows visible from the street are metal framed and their openings tend to be large and nearly square. Two windows at the south and east elevations of the northernmost mass wrap around the corner, forcing the brick veneer to take on a more vertical bias at the northern end of the east elevation. The building's lighting system was modified in 1962, but the structure does not otherwise seem to have been significantly altered.
