Summary for 117 Occidental AVE / Parcel ID 5247800530 / Inv #

Historic Name: Star Theater Common Name: New Stage Theater
Style: Commercial, Modern, None Neighborhood: Pioneer Square
Built By: Year Built: 1915
In the opinion of the survey, this property is located in a potential historic districe (National and/or local).
Called the “New Stage Theater,” in current King County records, the building has been altered to the point where it has no historical or architectural integrity. It may, in fact, be the first level of the former Star Theatre, built in 1915, and which operated as a movie palace. This building is described in the Tax Assessor’s records in 1953 as being “2 stories,” but the second story is higher than the third story of the building alongside it, because the upper level, at least, contained a theater. Like many buildings in Pioneer Square, it may have lost its upper floors in the Earthquake of 1949 (hence the tax assessor’s record a few years later), but there is no hard evidence of this fact. Richard White and Alan Black, who restored many building in the district with great success and even before the creation of the Pioneer Square- Skid Road National Historic District, jointly owned the building in 1998.
This is a one story building with one façade on Occidental Avenue South. It has a modern stucco façade, painted green and rectangular window openings. It has no obvious vestige of historical materials or architectural detailing on its exterior (or interior).
